The 7 Most Perplexing Lyrics on Prince’s “Purple Rain”

Chances are this man has gotten freaky with at least one member of your extended family.

I have long been a Prince advocate. The purple one really is one-of-a-kind, but I can’t decide whether that is a good thing or not. But I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: Purple Rain is the greatest album of all time. At the same time, his songwriting can be a bit “huh?” worthy (I mean the guy wrote songs called “Rock Hard in a Funky Place” and “Supercalifragisexy” for crying out loud). So here, presented without commentary, are the seven most perplexing lyrics on Purple Rain. (Note: “U”s and “2”s used as Prince would have wanted it)

  • Wendy? Yes, Lisa.  Is the water warm enough? Yes, Lisa. Shall we begin? Yes, Lisa.  –Computer Blue
  • I’ll never beat U.  I’ll never lie.  And if U’re evil I’ll forgive U by and by.I Would Die 4 U
  • Dearly Beloved,  We are gathered here today 2 get thru this thing called life.  Electric word life it means forever (Ed note: no it doesn’t) and thats a mighty long time.Let’s Go Crazy
  • Animals strike curious poses, they feel the heat … the heat between me and you – When Doves Cry
  • Paint a perfect picture, bring to life a vision in one’s mind.  The beauitiful ones always smash the picture …  always, every time. – The Beautiful Ones
  • Oh, she’ll show U no mercy, but she’ll sho’nuff, sho’nuff show U how 2 grindDarlin Nikki
  • Let’s go crazy.  Let’s get nuts  Let’s look 4 the purple banana ’til they put us in the truck.Let’s Go Crazy

Proof that when the music is awesome, the artist could read the phone book and people would still think it’s good.

That when doves cry line has always painted a strange picture in my mind. Maybe that’s why this song is on my “Bad but good 80’s music” playlist…
