Top 7 Best Lyrics from Arctic Monkey’s Suck It and See

Alex Turner, of Arctic Monkeys

Sheffield, England’s Arctic Monkeys have plenty of points on their resume to be proud of. (Holy alliteration.) For starters, they’ve survived, and come out victorious, in the biggest internet buzz band-trial to date, when they first emerged on the UK indie rock scene in 2002. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, became the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history, selling over 350,000 copies in the first week alone. They’ve gone on to make three other diverse records from their post-punk revivalist debut, and have been hailed as England’s “Next Big Thing.” That title comes and comes and gets placed on many young bands, but just when you thought the Monks we’re going to hit a mid-career slump in their mid-20s, they re-emerge with Suck It and See, released on June 6, via Domino Records. This album is much more accessible than its previous two, which were darker and took many psychedelic twists. The garage rock that captivated audiences in the beginning has returned, along with frontman Alex Turner’s wittiest and most flexible poetry to date. The lead guitarist and vocalist hadn’t considered himself much of a songwriter before this latest record, but really took the time to develop his lyrics and songs’ meanings this time around. It has paid off wonderfully. I strongly suggest giving this album a spin; I know for me personally, it’s one of the best albums released so far this year. It’s just fun, jangly, young person’s rock music for this day and age. Below are Alex Turner’s seven best lines from the various tracks on Suck It and See. (Forgive me, Jimbo, for undercutting you on this idea; you know I love this record just as much as you.)

7. “Give me an eenie meenie miney mo, or an ip dip dog shit rock ‘n’ roll.” – “Library Pictures”

6. “She looks as if she’s blowing a kiss at me and suddenly the sky is a schism. Sitting on the floor with a tambourine, crushing up a bundle of love.” – “That’s Where You’re Wrong”

5. “And do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now, or darling, have you started feeling old yet? Don’t worry; I’m sure that you’re still breaking hearts with the efficiency that only youth can harness.” – “Love Is A Laserquest”

4. “I took the batteries out my mysticism and put ’em in my thinking cap.” – “The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala”

3.  “I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what it is I need. Call up to listen to the voice of reason, and got the answering machine.” – “Reckless Serenade”

2. “You look like you’ve been for breakfast at the heartbreak hotel, and sat in the back booth by the pamphlets and the literature on how to lose. Your waitress was miserable, and so was your food. If you’re gonna try and walk on water make sure you wear your comfortable shoes.” – “Piledriver Waltz”

1. “I poured my aching heart into a pop song. I couldn’t get the hang of poetry. That’s not a skirt, girl, that’s a sawn-off shotgun. And I can only hope you’ve got it aimed at me.” – “Suck It and See”
