7 Reasons Why I Love The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour released their sophomore album “Out of Frequency” yesterday to the joy of, well, at least me. It’s been high on my list of anticipated albums, especially after the release of their first single Heart Attack on January 11th. I used the single to keep myself awake yesterday after not sleeping the night before. I was dancing in Barnes & Noble.

This wasn’t the first time I’ve gotten down to the band though, their first album “Fruits” is damn near perfection with its ridiculously good 60-70s pop sounds and Mette Lindberg’s Danish-born voice.

2. Mette’s Style

There are few people who are comfortable and confident enough in their clothing to pull off a fashion style that predates their generation. Sure, other singers have pulled off a 60s-70s style, but Mette has seemingly pulled her wardrobe and looks out of one of those time traveling closets. Even their Spotify playlist is filled with the oldies like Nancy Sinatra, Andrea True, and The Zombies.

5. The Sound

It’s a mix of jazz, psychedelic pop, American soul and a disco dance party. A sound from another era brought to you by the bands producer/band member Lars Iverson. In a songwriters interview he talked about how creates a song:

It’s not like I have this certain way of doing it all the time, but what happens most of the time is that I first get the feeling, the vibe of the song in my head. I hear a certain beat, like a groove or something. And some interesting chord changes, like a soundscape. It can even start with imagining a certain type of tambourine, like shakers or percussion instruments, and then building on top of that. If you picture a ’60s kind of tambourine you want to create that kind of universe.

Even some of the the lyrics are about a different era. Golden Age is about dreaming yourself back in time like the ’30s, ’60s, ’70s or whenever you feel like there was something going on that you missed. Throw in some old school vocal stylings, like Lady JesusFunkadelic gang chorus (a band that sounds like it came from the Vietnam era), and you’ve got yourself a bona fide time traveling sound.

7. The Band Sounds the Same, If Not Better, Live

If you get a chance, that would be tomorrow if you live in Philadelphia, see them live. It will be one of the best shows of your life if you’ve got the balls to dance. There’s something about brass instruments, Lars’ electronics and Mette’s contagious energy and pristine voice that makes it almost impossible not to smile and dance.

The rest of the live band consists of Miloud Carl Sabri (trumpet), Sven Meinild (saxophone), Mikkel Baltser Dørig (guitar) and Rasmus Valldorf (drums).

Bonus: They Stole Prop Beers on the Set of their Heineken Commercial

They went looking for some beer on the set of the commercial and came across some delicious, cold looking beers. Unfortunately, for the prop man, they grabbed a couple of the dolled up beers that were made for the close up shots. According to the prop guy it takes approximately 30 minutes to put “make-up” on the beer. He was a bit upset.

I love the Asteroids! Just bought “Out of Frequency” twice. I’ll admit I don’t much like the video for “Heart attack”, because it looks EXACTLY like a typical Madonna video, very unoriginal. But the song itself is great. I wish they were coming to Atlanta.

I agree fully with your description of the Asteroid Galaxy Tour. The mix of an old school 60’s-70’s vibe, psychadelic jams, and a little bit of pop can not be rivaled by most bands now a days. I too have been waiting on this album for a while now and when tuesday rolled around I definitely copped it. Good list off Shawn.

Just saw them in Vancouver. Great show – You’re absolutely correct, they sound as good if not better live.
